| Some
questions: |
Should I use HAS or HAVE in this
sentence? A company in New York has/have developed
BB: The answer is HAS, because "company" = a singular form of a collective
noun.
|
The same
here: With their win yesterday Italy has/have
moved.
BB: Same answer!
|
The same
here: The team has/have played.
BB: Same as above!
|
What is the difference between these
sentences? In recent years, Brazilian companies have been
put/have put a lot of money into developing advanced
technology.
BB: The first version is incorrect; the second is
correct. That's the difference. Here are two correct
versions:
In recent years, Brazilian companies have been putting a lot of money into developing advanced
technology.
In recent years, Brazilian companies have put a lot of money into developing advanced
technology.
As you know, one uses present perfect continuous
(or progressive) and the other uses present
perfect.

What is the name of a place where people make barbecue or put the meat or sausage
on? Is it barbecue grill?
BB: Ah! A cooking question! In the US and
Canada, we call it a barbecue grill. A lot of people just
say, "Put it on the barbecue." (Some homes or restaurants have barbecue
"pits.")
|
Can I
say: "Let¹s have a breakfast"? The "a" is
correct?
BB: Most people just say, "Let's have
breakfast." Sometimes we use "a" when referring to an
event, like a party. We'll say, "I'm planning a breakfast for 100 people next
week. Would you like to help me cook some
eggs?" Or: "I attended a dinner last night and Bill Clinton was the guest speaker."
But, usually, we don't use the indefinite article with
breakfast, lunch or dinner.
